The so-called Mars “flower” photo was snapped on Dec. 19 by the microscope-like Mars Hand Lends Imager at the end of Curiosity’s robotic arm.

If an asteroid is headed our way, we all will be pretty sure of our own demise, but a recent claim by researchers might leave us a little hope.

As you’ve guessed this won’t be just a few paintballs, but a virtual asteroid redecoration with a blast of an estimated five tons of white paint. Sung Wook Paek, a graduate student in MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics came up with the concept and did the math using the asteroid Apophis, which could buzz us in 2029, to explain how his theory would work. NASA Funds Self-Building Space Ships

There’s not much left on the list of things science hasn’t done and they soon will have broken a barrier in artificial intelligence by creating space ships that can build themselves.

The space agency recently awarded $100,000 to a project called SpiderFab that aims to study this concept and ultimately produce designs for such a craft. In theory, a small vehicle could launch in a rocket carrying the raw materials needed by an onboard 3D printer. Unlike fully-assembled craft, it wouldn’t need to be designed to fold up or built to withstand the extreme forces involved in liftoff and ascent into space. Continue reading
